Our Origin Story

The South Church and the South Church Cares Committee share a common story. When the stewardship of our building ended in 2017, the Church Council began to create a new vision for our church. Our congregation did not need to spend most of its time and financial resources on the physical structure of our church. Suddenly, we had the power to reach out to our local, national, and global community.

The Mission Board of The South Church became South Church Cares. Its new task was to make a positive difference, wherever a need existed. Beginning in 2018, the Church Council voted to allocate a significant budget to the new committee. To date, the committee has donated over $200,000 to charities large and small, local and global.

South Church Cares regularly donates to local food pantries. We also help alleviate hunger nationwide through Feeding America. Some of our recipient are large, with world wide reach: Water.org, Doctors Without Borders, the Red Cross. And some recipients are smaller: Trees that Feed Foundation, I Am a Gentleman, and Clean Up Give Back.

Our favorite donation, though, is our annual Christmas giving event, called Charity Begins at Home. Since 2018, South Church Cares has funded a gift of $100 to every member of The South Church - and they are to pass it along to the charity of their choice. Some of these gifts are deeply personal, providing much needed help to cancer patients or supporting the parents of a baby with health problems. For many of our members, Charity Begins at Home is a valued and meaningful part of their Christmas celebration.

South Church Cares welcomes new ideas for giving, as well as donations to our committee to widen the scope of our work.
